Spring is a favorite time of year for many people. There’s a freshness and vibrance to things after what can be a long, harsh winter.

Weather is mostly mild and breezy, flowers and trees are on brilliant display, and nature calls us to enjoy it anew.

There are also plenty of reasons to get in the backyard and barbecue! Graduations and engagements, gender reveals, and family reunions all call for some burgers and hot dogs.

But this increase in outdoor gatherings also unfortunately brings an increase in accidental fires. In fact, spring sees more daily fires on average than any other time of year. But with just a little effort, you can keep your backyard activities fire safe this season.

The grill. Grills, beloved and ubiquitous though they may be, are prime suspects for outdoor fires in spring and summer. The amount of high heat and combustible elements is almost certain to present danger, so you must exercise utmost caution when grilling. Use grills that are in good working order and in a safe area, away from anything flammable. Check for leaks, holes or excess grease before grilling. And don’t forget to clean up when you’re done! Almost 20% of grill fires are due to poor cleaning.

The fire pit. The fire pit is a social center for backyard conversation, and of course it’s an amazing place to roast some marshmallows. Avoid flying embers by not adding pine needles or leaves to the fire, and by cooling it slowly with water as opposed to dumping a whole bucket on it at once. Always pay attention to the fire, never leaving it to burn on its own, and keep kids and pets away unless they’re under close supervision.

Chimneys and dryer vents. Check your chimney now that you’re done with it for a while, and clear out any soot and ash that has built up over a few months of fires. And take the vent pipe off the back of your dryer, removing any lint that may be hiding in there after sneaking through the lint trap.
